Rennes 3-1 West Ham: Hammers suffer first defeat of their pre-season campaign - as Tomas Soucek's equaliser is cancelled out by French opponents

West Ham suffered their first loss of their pre-season campaign against Rennes
David Moyes' side are keen for a Declan Rice replacement after his Arsenal move
French club Stade Rennais beat the London club 3-1 despite Soucek's leveller

Despite a goal from Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek, West Ham's efforts against Stade Rennais were not enough to earn them a pre-season victory.

The French team steamed ahead in the opening ten minutes, when French midfielder Baptiste Santamaria found the back of the net with a long-range strike from 35 yards out.

Despite being 1-0 down, the Hammers fought back and Soucek levelled the scoring thanks to a header from a free-kick.

David Moyes named an almost full-squad for the first time and headed into the second half level with their French opponents.

West Ham had beaten Tottenham 3-2 in a recent friendly, though suffered against French club

Despite a goal from Tomas Soucek, West Ham's efforts were not enough to earn them a victory

However, it wasn't long before Rennes reclaimed their lead with a close-range goal from under-21s Arnaud Kalimuendo, closely following by an unfortunate own goal from Angelo Ogbonna.

Suffering their first defeat, attention turns to the club's summer transfer window, as they are one of the few Premier League clubs yet to make a signing.

The Irons lost captain Declan Rice in a record transfer bid of £105million to London rivals Arsenal in July.

The pre-season match meant Nayef Aguerd took over the captain's armband on his return to the club he joined the Irons from last summer.

The Hammers boss will have a difficult job in finding a suitable midfield replacement for an already-weakened side.

Ex-Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is a top target for West Ham, although the club have since had a £20m bid rejected from the Manchester club.

Rennes opened the game with intensity, rewarding their pacy performance with Santamaria's early goal from 35 yards out which swerved into the top right corner.

West Ham turned up the heat on their performance to produce a few chances against the French side.

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta attempted an almost perfect striking volley in a mirror image of Santamaria's, though Rennes' goalkeeper Steve Mandanda managed to knock it aside.

Heading into the 2023-24 league campaign, David Moyes' side will be looking to improve on their 14th place finish.

Having lost their star player to a rival club, the Irons are eyeing Southampton's James Ward-Prowse and Manchester United's Scott McTominay as their first summer signings.

West Ham player has asked Sullivan to let him leave after PL rival see three bids rejected

Jordan Harris

Aaron Cresswell is hoping that West Ham will accept a bid from Wolves for the defender after rejecting three offers from Julen Lopetegui’s side so far.

That is according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (30/7; page 59), which notes that the 33-year-old is keen to move to Molineux to be closer to the North-West.

It does appear that Aaron Cresswell has probably now made his final appearance for West Ham. Of course, he has been an outstanding servant for the Hammers, making 331 appearances for the club in all competitions. Declan Rice previously suggested that he is a ‘top, top player‘.

Cresswell pushing for Wolves move as West Ham reject three bids

It has been apparent for some time however, that the club have needed to replace him. But the West Ham hierarchy are seemingly not willing to let him go without a fight.

The Sun on Sunday (30/7; page 59) reports that Wolves have now made three bids for Cresswell. The latest offer was worth £2 million.

But despite Cresswell wanting the move to West Ham’s Premier League rivals, the Hammers are demanding more money for the veteran.

It is claimed that Cresswell has gone as far as to speak with David Sullivan to ask for an exit to be sanctioned.

You would imagine that a deal will be agreed at some stage. Certainly, it hardly does West Ham many favours to keep Cresswell beyond this summer.

He has previously been one of the standout full-backs in the Premier League. But his performances have been in decline for a little while. And if he is not too happy to stick around, he is hardly likely to rediscover his best form once again in the future.

Much may depend on what West Ham’s valuation actually is. But if the two clubs are not too far away, you would think that it would be best for all for a compromise to be reached.

Young France international left-back Adrien Truffert was pulled out of the Rennes team against the Hammers.

And it came on the same day Football Insider reported talks had taken place over a potential £15m deal to bring him to the London Stadium.

Rennes have been frustrated in their attempts to get Truffert signed up to a new contract. His current deal expires in 2025.

He has been linked with a move to West Ham for the last month. And reports claim a deal could be done for £15m.

UEFA FFP loses club by club compared

UEFA’s FFP rules now allow clubs to incur losses of €60m (£50m) over three years, compared to the previous allowance of €30m. A spending cap on wages, transfers and agents’ fees to 70% of a club’s total revenue by 2025/2026 has also been introduced. Clubs are also required to settle overdue payables in specified timeframes.

The UEFA Executive Committee met back in 2020 and approved a set of temporary emergency measures as a supplement to the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations to take into account the adverse effect of COVID-19 on the finances of clubs. The financial years 2020 and 2021 are assessed as one single period so losses are compared over four periods rather than three for the next new years, with the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons averaged out as one period.

Clubs are also allowed to subtract what is called virtue spending, which includes any spending on areas like infrastructure, women’s teams, youth teams, and academies, as well as community projects or charitable work. Wage totals that are included for FFP calculations are for players and coaches only, not the total wage club figure, so there is a lot of guesswork involved, but these will not materially change the statistics and probably by no more than 10% in the worst case.

The table below shows the eight clubs in European competitions this coming season and their combined rolling losses/profits for the UEFA FFP seasons 2021, 2022 and 2023.

In 2021 only Brighton, Aston Villa and West Ham technically breached FFP rules; Brighton and Aston Villa were not in Europe at the time, so it didn’t apply to them. The Hammers technically went over by £7m, but that could be covered by virtue spending and non-player/coach wages, so they probably break even on FFP that period to

In 2022 Everyone except Liverpool and Manchester City breached UEFA FFP regulations relying on exceptions directly due to COVID losses.

If we look forward to 2023, clubs have not published figures for last season but have shared them with UEFA. This table excludes 2023.

It shows that five clubs, Arsenal, Brighton, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Newcastle, are already over the £50m limit so they would all need to make a profit last season.

Liverpool, Man City, and West Ham can afford to make losses for last season; in the case of West Ham, they could lose £13m last season.

Thanks to Kieran Macguire from the Price of Football for extracts of his famous football accounts spreadsheet to work out the losses.
